  33.             <body><![CDATA[Bart├│kΓÇÖs two sonatas for violin and piano date from the composerΓÇÖs middle period (1921-22), written between the second and third of his great string quartets. composed for himself and the violinist<br>Jelly dΓÇÖAranyi, they share the gritty, haunting idiom of those chamber masterpieces, influenced by Schoenbergian atonality, Debussy and Hungarian folk music. Unlike the quartets, however, they remain on the fringes of the violin sonata repertoire, championed on disc in recent years only by the adventurous Gidon Kremer. The solo sonata, written in 1944 at the behest of the young Yehudi Menuhin, is more frequently recorded (most notably by Menuhin himself and Nigel Kennedy in one of his rare, and outstanding, forays into chamber music) and is certainly more popular: the late ΓÇ£romanticΓÇ¥ Bart├│k of the Concerto for Orchestra looking back nostalgically to BachΓÇÖs sonatas and partitas for solo violin. Tetzlaff may not be as famous as Menuhin or Kennedy, but the German is no less persuasive in the solo sonata and his partnership with the Norwegian pianist in the violin/piano sonatas is richly rewarding.Click <a href="asfunction:Tardis.webPageOpen,http://www.virginclassics.com"><b>here</b></a> to visit the official Virgin Classics website. ]]></body>
